Thanks everyone for supporting these charities.
In general I've been looking out for great charities that are geared toward education, and entrepreneurism. I think that those two areas are incredibly important factors in helping people become more talented, confident, and capable of giving back themselves.
The environment is also a big concern, but nowadays I'm not entirely certain how best to approach environmental concerns, so I'm focusing my attention on educational and entrepreneurial charities for now. I figure both of those will go a long way toward affecting the environment as well.
Really any support you can give to these charities would be great. Thanks!

Brightworks is a school that reimagines the idea of school. In September 2011, we will offer a one-of-a-kind K-12 curriculum: students explore an idea from multiple perspectives with the help of real-world experts, tools, and experiences, collaborate on projects driven by their curiosity, and share their findings with the world. Brightworks does away with tests, grades and homework, instead supporting each student as they create a rich and detailed portfolio of their work. Brightworks provides a sliding-scale tuition option to all applicants.
At Brightworks, we believe that a school should serve as a learning commons and a community workshop; an intellectual and creative heart of the neighborhood it resides in. Brightworks will also offer after-school, evening and weekend workshops for children and adults.

These guys are looking at education from a fantastic perspective. Making things and exploring things and failing in fun ways and giving kids an opportunity to learn that they can figure out things and can take apart complex things. A lot of real world value.

These guys put on one of the most engaging and interesting programs I've seen in a long time. Although they probably aren't helping education at a more basic level, I do think they're approach to the show and the content of the show is a model for education that I would love to see replicated in other ways.
The Khan Academy is a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) with the mission of providing a world-class education to anyone, anywhere. Despite being the work of one man, Salman Khan, this 1600+ video library is the most-used educational video resource as measured by YouTube video views per day and unique users per month.
We are complementing this ever-growing library with user-paced exercises--developed as an open source project--allowing the Khan Academy to become the free classroom for the World.
Khan Academy is the effort of one man, Salman Khan, who has put together more then 1500 education videos on a wide range of subjects. The format he uses is quite different from the format you would normally think of for distance learning, and I think is a huge improvement. With effective distance learning an effective education could become much more accessible by people all over the world. A very powerful possibility.

Helping people start their own businesses seems to be a great way to help people out of poverty and give them control of their life. Micro-lending seems to be a bit controversial these days, but I still think it is a there are few better mechanisms for helping people pull themselves out of poverty, empowering them to help people around them, and, potentially, helping to improve impoverished communities in general.
